Happiness Is…

So for those of you not in the know, I’ve been taking a lot of online courses recently. Last year I did a couple of English courses and The Science of Everyday Thinking. I also took Spanish but dropped it because I found it incredibly difficult – I’ll probably pick it up again one day.

Anyway, this year I’ve enrolled for a bunch of new courses as well – another English writing course, Python and one which I started today, The Science of Happiness. I had no idea what to expect when I signed up for it. The course description intrigued me so I just clicked sign up. I had nothing to lose anyway. I’m the kind of guy who believes that it’s better to spread joy than misery (though my song lyrics don’t seem to reflect that kek) so I was very interested to find out more about happiness.

Sex in tech

Apple does a lot of things I don’t agree with, but there’s one thing I think they’re brilliant at: not using sex to sell their products. As far as I can remember, Apple has never used any sexy ladies to market their products. Their ads, while sometimes ridiculous, are clean and wholesome. But what’s important is that they focus on their products. And when there’s a plethora of parodies available online, you know they’re doing something right.

At launch events, they don’t have sexy women parading around holding their devices. Instead, they have old men on stage talking about what’s good and new about their devices.

The lack of sexy women holding their devices allows consumers and the media to focus on what’s important – the products that they are selling. Not the scantily clad women holding them. Sure, you don’t see media writing about the women, but on social media and event photographs – they’re there. If they’re not the focus of the launch event, then why hire them in the first place?

Also, what are sexy women holding gadgets supposed to achieve? Today’s tech world is pretty different from what it was like many years ago. There’s no need to cater to basement-dwelling mouth-breathing neckbeards who dream of being in the company of such women – technology is now embraced by everybody.

Sure, sex sells. It’s been proven. Evocative imagery draws attention. But they’re irrelevant when it comes to technology. Sexy women for alcohol, fashion and beauty products makes sense, but tech? Unless they’re selling high-tech sex toys, I don’t see the connection.

I’m not against using sexy women to sell tech – people should be able to do whatever they want to. I’m just questioning the decision to do so. Never have I seen a device being used/held by a hot girl and thought to myself ‘oh shit, I need to own that product!’.

Red Sky

Someday Maybe by PyriteKite

Nobody was prepared even though we knew well in advance it was going to happen. We all just ignored the signs – or just believed that it wasn’t going to happen. The end of the world. That’s what they said it was.

It was all over the news – on the TV, on radio, on the internet. Nobody could stop talking about it. It was finally happening. After all the predictions that never happened in the previous years, it was finally coming true.

Hi, my name is

When I was growing up, I didn’t like my name very much. I always thought ‘George’ was so uncool and wondered why my parents would give me such a name. All the kids making fun of it didn’t help either.

Georgie Porgie, pudding and pie, kissed the girls and made them cry.
When the boys came out to play, Georgie Porgie ran away.

I guess I can be glad I didn’t grow up in the 2000s – I didn’t have to suffer from any George W. Bush flak. However, George H. W. Bush was president that time and fortunately he didn’t get that much hate (or I was too young to be aware of it).

Later on in life, it was all about George of the Jungle, which I guess wasn’t so bad either since people enjoyed the Brendan Fraser movie…right?

I remember wanting to be named Gus. Since I couldn’t change my name, I drew comics about a character named Gus who was supposed to be me. My first online handle was Gus091 (Gus was taken). I got excited watching the cartoon Recess because there was a character named Gus. My mom and sister made fun of me for wanting that name – they said it was disgusting (haha).

I don’t remember at what point in my life it was when I started embracing my name. But it was probably when I realized that having an English name, especially one that was in my official identification, was quite special in this country.

People always asked me, ‘is George your real name?’ My answers began with ‘yes, why would I call myself George?’ and eventually to just ‘yes’ and when I started embracing my name, ‘yes, it’s even on my birth cert’.

When I looked up the meaning of my name – farmer, I thought it was pretty cool. I mean sure, it’s no destroyer of worlds but hey – at least it wasn’t something lame like Baby Boi.

Who knows, maybe I’ll become a farmer one day and finally live up to my name. It will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And as for my Chinese name – that’s a story for another day. Kek.

Gig #95 – Welcome to 2016

Woot, 2 weeks into the new year and I’ve got a show. Pretty psyched as this week’s Barlai Open Mic has been fully reserved (opposed to the one on Xmas eve where it was just a 2-man show haha).

Today – this photograph popped up on my Facebook feed, and I was surprised at the date: 6 years ago. I looked up my old blog post for my first ever performance and realized that it has been 9 years since I started performing as 2storeyheart :O Damn, how time flies! In my mind, I keep thinking that I’ve only been doing it for 3 years…

Well, there’s really not much to say except that I’m an old fart in this ‘scene’ and I’m looking forward to this week’s gig. Hope to see some old and new faces – it should be a blast!
